Velveteen Clothes Emporium is back

Velveteen Clothes Emporium, which previously specialised in steampunk and gothic fashion, is back as an Exeter store, with even more to offer than before.

Up until Saturday 5 April fans of Velveteen would have to pay a visit to the businesses’ big Red wagon to make a purchase, which would pop up in various Devon locations.

On Saturday 5 April Velveteen returned as a permanent base in Fore Street, and owner Julie Dunn says they haven’t looked back. She said:

“The response since opening has been excellent. Obviously the shop looks fabulous. People’s first impressions when they come in is ‘wow’. The shop looks so interesting and we have beautiful chandeliers hanging which capture people’s eye.”

It is not just the clothes, with the store now boasting a wide variety of styles, that offer a sense of the ‘wow’ factor.

“We are selling a bit of furniture now and we are also trying to open up to a wider market. We do sell more gentle things now, as well as dark black punky clothes.

“We have also created an extension which makes a great impact. We are going to be putting two hairdressing chairs up there and it’ll be a hair salon. Downstairs we have also created a beauty room.”

Hair, beauty and fashion are just the tip of the iceberg at Velveteen’s new store.

“Jon ( co-owner of Velveteen) has made a tarot room downstairs. He is going to be doing steampunk tarot readings. We fancy doing lots of events here really, fashion shows, bands playing. The shop is going to offer almost everything!

“We are getting involved in something called The Carnivale of the Peculiar, which is a steam punk event taking place in June and sometimes we get involved with The Exeter Alternative Theatre. We have been open three weeks and we have had two bands play so far and we hope to have another play next weekend.”

Velveteen’s new store can be found in Fore Street next to The Jasmine restaurant.
