Duncan Attwood, who runs fit20 Exeter reports that according to one of the world’s largest studies conducted in sports and exercise science, 20 minutes of training per week is enough to achieve strength gains.

“We at fit20 Exeter have known this for some time, based on the progress of our clients which is recorded each week,” says Duncan. “However, this is now scientifically proven,” referring to research conducted by Associate Professor James Steele of Sport and Exercise Sciences at Solent University in Southampton.

The study conducted by Prof Steele, examined the results of some 15,000 participants in fit20’s ‘minimum effective dose’ strength training over seven years.  His conclusion was that one weekly 20-minutes training session is enough to improve muscle strength significantly and provide the health benefits that go with it.

Furthermore, the results published by the Research Quarterly for Exercise and Sport, clearly indicate that fit20 members make significant strength gains of 30 to 50 percent in the first year of training. This is regardless of age, gender, and fitness level - from just from one short training session a week.

“50 percent is a substantial improvement,” says Prof Steele. “Even 30 percent is a huge improvement that will likely impact people’s health in a positive way.”

Duncan, who has run fit20 Exeter for just over three years is delighted by this growing body of evidence that confirms one doesn’t have to visit the gym regularly to remain healthy into later life or sweat it out multiple times a week.

Strength changes everything at fit20 Exeter

“Our vision statement at fit20 Exeter is 'Strength changes everything',” says Duncan. “Strength is game-changing in the quest for endurance in your chosen sport or when it comes to all types of physical ailments, even high blood pressure."

Anyone can do 20 minutes a week of strength training to improve their health and fitness significantly. Gym gear isn't necessary and you don't need to shower after.  The exercises are done in an airconditioned studio and you don't sweat. This offers easier options to people who don't feel they have time to go the gym.

“I'm particularly excited about the findings of this study which confirm what we have always believed at fit20,” said Niri Patel, Managing Director of fit20 UK. “That fit20 is not just strength training, it is health and longevity training! Just one 20-minute session a week makes you much stronger, regardless of age, gender or athletic ability.”

Fit20 Exeter is part of the Dutch franchise formula that has 170 studios in 10 countries that specialise in this 'minimum effective dose' training approach. Studios are opening up all across the UK.
