Exeter Cathedral offers free entry for city residents
Exeter Cathedral has produced a resident’s card for the first time, offering people living in the city free entry to their Cathedral.
The card covers people living in postcodes EX1 to EX4. Forms will be sent in the post to eligible homes.
The Cathedral has to charge visitors to attempt to cover some of its £4,000 a day running costs, said the Cathedral’s managing director, Alison Davenport, but it is doing all its can to ensure that people in the city and around it can visit for free, as often as they like.
“This is the first time we have produced a resident’s card, because we want people in the city to feel this is their Cathedral, and be at home here. We are immensely proud of our Cathedral and we know that the people of Exeter are too,” she said.
Those living outside the city boundaries who are able to Gift Aid their admission and pay to visit just once, will get an annual pass. Also, anyone can join the Friends of Exeter Cathedral for just £6, and so gain a host of other benefits, including talks and discounts at the Cathedral café and shop.
Exeter Cathedral boasts the longest vaulted ceiling of any Cathedral in Europe, and is celebrated as one of the best examples of Gothic architecture anywhere. Its famous West Front has just undergone a huge restoration programme, and the cleaned stonework was unveiled last month.
