The Donkey Sanctuary is welcoming volunteers to its Woodland Management Volunteer Day near Honiton on Saturday 18 February from 10am till 4pm.

Each month the Sanctuary runs wildlife and conservation volunteer days, which include outdoor practical tasks such as gardening, woodland management, hedge planting, willow weaving and the building of bug hotels. This is a fantastic opportunity to meet like-minded people, share and learn skills, and have fun.

This month, the team will be carrying out woodland management at Brookfield Farm, near Honiton, which is home to over 300 donkeys and will soon be the location of the Charity’s new donkey hospital. As well as helping to keep the woods in good condition, volunteers will get the opportunity to meet the Sanctuary’s donkeys, who benefit from these projects through environmental enrichment and a healthy ecosystem.

The Sanctuary will also be holding a Water Vole Habitat Restoration Volunteer Day on Wednesday 22 February and is welcoming volunteers on a drop-in basis to its Butterfly Garden Thursdays - a weekly gardening project running all year round.

The Donkey Sanctuary’s Volunteer Days are free events, however, booking is essential. No experience is necessary, just a reasonable level of fitness, and volunteers must be over the age of 16. Gloves, tools and hot drinks will be provided. Volunteers are asked to bring a packed lunch and a bottled drink.

As part of their Higher Level Stewardship scheme with Natural England, The Donkey Sanctuary takes a proactive approach to improving conditions for farmland wildlife, enhancing landscape character and protecting the natural and historic environment. Volunteers play a vital role in this work, assisting in many areas of conservation.
