The Donkey Sanctuary is working with Devon Greater Horseshoe Bat Project to hold a hedgelaying event  on Wednesday 10 February in the Events Barn at The Sanctuary’s Sidmouth site from 10am till 4pm

Devon is home to one of the UK’s rarest bats, the greater horseshoe bat, and this fascinating species needs our help to increase its population to secure its future. Like much of our wildlife, it is under pressure due to habitat loss, so one of the ways we can help is to make sure that it has what it needs to carry out its nightly activity of hunting for insect prey.

In 2013 The Donkey Sanctuary entered Natural England’s Higher Level Stewardship scheme. This scheme runs for ten years and aims to improve conditions for farmland wildlife, enhance landscape character and protect the natural and historic environment. One of its aims is to improve foraging habitat for bat species.

Hedgerows are natural linear features which provide bats with connectivity between roost sites and foraging areas, and allow them to navigate their way across the landscape. The Donkey Sanctuary actively manages hedgerows to make sure they continue to provide flightlines for bats, together with food and shelter for other wildlife.

Ruth Angell, Wildlife and Conservation Coordinator says: “Join us and the Devon Greater Horseshoe Bat Project for a day of hedgelaying where you can find out about greater horseshoe bats, learn a practical skill and enjoy a day working outdoors. Wear sturdy footwear and outdoor clothing to suit the weather conditions. We will provide tools and work gloves, but feel free to bring your own if you have them.”

This is a free event, however, booking is essential. Bring a packed lunch or lunch can be purchased from the Hayloft restaurant. Hot drinks will be available throughout the day.
