BioBlitz returns for another action-packed day
Badgers, dragonflies and robins are just a selection of the species that can be observed at the University of Exeter’s Penryn Campus for the annual BioBlitz day.
The team are inviting members of the community to join a team of students to ‘blitz’ the Penryn Campus in a bid to survey the surrounding animals on Saturday 21 May.
In addition to the survey, wildlife and charity organisations from Cornwall will play host to exciting stalls and activities for everyone to get involved in as part of the day. Activities include nature walks, small mammal trapping, treasure hunts, face painting and a bouncy castle.
One of the student organisers, Laura Goodhead, currently studying zoology, said: “I am particularly looking forward to meeting all the people coming to the event. It gives the students and community a chance to engage while sharing an interest in the wildlife. It also provides an excellent chance for young people to become interested in wildlife, having seen the different animals that are on show.
“Hopefully everyone will be able take something away with them so they can apply their newfound knowledge to record the wildlife they see in their garden in order to help with conservation in Cornwall.”
Beth Roberts, PhD Researcher at the University, said: “It is really exciting to know that the BioBlitz has carried on after the first one we organised back in 2012. Each year the students who organise it add their own stamp to the event, making each one really special. I cannot wait to find out what this year’s event has in store.”
BioBlitz Tremough is an event held at the Penryn Campus, in which a 24 hour survey of all animal species on campus takes place. The information found contributes to the Environmental Records Centre for Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly (ERCCIS). The day is free and runs from 7am-9pm.
BioBlitz has secured funding from the University of Exeter and EcoSoc – a student-led society – to ensure its annual return.
The event is open to all ages and provides a mix of adventure and education for families. Some events will require prior booking and have limited spaces. For more information, visit the official website at: http://bioblitztremough.com/home/4592144468
