SWH finish work at Axe Valley Community College ahead of schedule

SWH recently completed building works at Axe Valley Community College seven weeks ahead of schedule.

The works, carried out for Devon County Council, comprised of two main classrooms, a third smaller class room and a lobby entrance.

Our works also included the demolition of the existing rooms (including some asbestos removal) and construction of the building.

The construction was originally masonry, which SWH changed to closed panel timber frame solution for speed, and to reduce the amount of site traffic required to travel through the school.

SWH undertook all of the works from start to finish including mechanical and electrical works and used their own directly employed carpenters, decorators and tarmac layers on the scheme. The rest of the works were managed through SWH’s sub contractor supply chain.

The school remained completely operational whilst the works were carried out and SWH utilised strict delivery times for all vehicle movements, with a banks-man who walked in front of each vehicle at all times to ensure the safety of the school pupils and staff.

Throughout the project SWH maintained a close liaison with both neighbours and the school; the firm even held seminars for those children that were interested in construction as a potential career.

Although the programme was contracted to last for 23 weeks, the hard working build team managed to complete in just 16, which also included additional car park tarmac works.
