Lorry fire causes A30 delays

The Fire Service received several calls reporting a lorry on fire before or just after the Whiddon Down junction on the A30 Westbound.

One fire appliance from Danes Castle Exeter, one fire appliance from Middlemoor Exeter and the water foam carrier from Torquay attended.

Fire crews confirmed one large goods vehicle with an empty trailer well alight and severely damaged by fire on the public highway.

The blaze was extinguished by fire crews using four breathing apparatus wearers and two hose reel jets, fire crews utilised foam to aid extinguishment.  The cause of the fire is believed to be accidental.

Highways attended to deal with a leakage of diesel on the carriageway.  The Environment Agency were made aware of this incident.

Lunchtime update:

One lane remains closed on the A30 westbound between Whiddon Down and Okehampton Services in Okehampton.
