Four Oxbridge offers for Exeter School
Exeter School is pleased to complete this year’s Oxbridge admissions process with the announcement that four pupils have been offered places.
At Cambridge, alumna Kate Marks has an unconditional offer to read History at Murray Edwards New Hall and Aidan Higgins an offer to read Engineering at St John’s.
At Oxford, Luke Malone has been offered a place at St Catherine’s to read Materials Science and Toby de Mendonça has an offer to read Chemistry.
2015 leaver Kate is on the RFU National Youth Council, a Young Ambassador for the 2015 Rugby World Cup and Captain of the Cornwall County Squad. Her poetry was also published in the ‘War of Words’ anthology last year.
Kate said her offer was for a college that prioritises progress and opportunities for women at the university.
“I am incredibly excited to be taught by some of the most eminent historians,” she said.
Sergeant in the RAF section of the Combined Cadet Force, Aidan is also a Great British Bake-off fan, keen on squash and hopes to cycle from Land’s End to John O’ Groats.
Artist Toby was one of five Exeter School pupils to take part in the Doddiscombsleigh Art Show last year. Toby also plays drums in three school bands including the Exeter School jazz band.
Senior Prefect Luke recently achieved a Bronze award in both the British Physics Olympiad and Chemistry Challenge. He was also lead in the Senior School rendition of Twelfth Night and has won Model United Nations awards.
Luke said the school had been fantastic in helping him prepare for the PAT exam (Physics Aptitude Test) and the interviews as well as providing lots of books related to Materials Science to read.
“Exeter School has been a fantastic place to be academically stretched and challenged whilst also providing help as and when you need it,” he said.
“I am very grateful to all the teachers who have helped me prepare - especially the Maths, Physics and Chemistry departments - without whom receiving an offer wouldn’t have been possible. I hope in the future to complete a PhD and then to continue postdoc research.”
Oxbridge coordinator Julia Hodgetts said she would like to congratulate all the interviewees this year in taking part in what is increasingly a challenging global competition for places at Cambridge and Oxford.
“Particular congratulations go to the pupils who have been offered places,” she said.
Exeter School has an excellent record of success in placing pupils in a range of leading universities. It carries out a guided programme of events throughout its two years of Sixth Form to prepare pupils for university interviews and future employment including specialist talks from universities and alumni, a practice interview scheme, comprehensive Careers evening, Oxbridge group, Medical Society, and two in-house university and Careers advisers.
