Exeter Optometrist needs your glasses for the Gambia

Optometrist Kieran Loft, from the Royal Devon and Exeter’s West of England Eye Unit (WEEU), is on the lookout for your old spectacles.

In January 2015, Kieran will be going on an aid mission with local charity the Plymouth-Bissary Aid Project to perform eye tests and distribute glasses to people in a remote part of the Gambia.

Kieran is asking for old or unneeded glasses to be donated at the reception desk of West of England Eye Unit, just near the main entrance to the Wonford hospital, before they are shipped out to West Africa in November.

Bag it. Beat it for BHF!

Princesshay has joined forces with British Heart Foundation (BHF) shops to launch their Bag It. Beat It. campaign, which urges the Exeter community to donate bags full of unwanted items.

Every bag donated will fund life-saving heart research, helping over 40,000 little heroes continue to fight congenital heart disease.

Before the BHF was founded, only one in five babies born with congenital heart disease saw their first birthday, let alone their first day of school. Thanks to pioneering research, now around 4,000 children are able to experience their first day of school...

Sky dive record attempt fun day

Devon- and Cornwall-based charity, Pete’s Dragons is set to embark on its biggest fund raising event yet - a record of 60 sky dives from 15,000 feet and falling at around 135mph - raising money for Cornwall Search & Rescue and The Samaritans.

But to get these adrenaline junkies as far as Dunkerswell Aerodrome, they need to raise vital funds to get the campaign kick-started. Elf to create family room at RD&E

The Exeter Leukaemia Fund (ELF) has invested £30,000 to help realise the idea of building a family room for Haematology patients at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital.

Children and young people who are having oncology treatment on Bramble ward at the Royal Devon and Exeter hospital can now enjoy two newly refurbished rooms thanks to Dawlish charity Richard’s Wish.

Richard’s Wish was set up in memory of seventeen year old Richard Cridge, who had oncology treatment for Ewings Sarcoma on Bramble ward before he passed away in 2008.

Princesshay honey creating a buzz

Princesshay’s 45,000 bees have been busily producing honey for the shoppers of Exeter over the spring and summer months. The delicious golden honey is now available to buy from Chandos Deli in Princesshay, each purchase raises money for charity.

Over 100lbs of honey has been extracted from the five hives housed on the rooftop city garden in Princesshay. The diverse variety of expertly chosen fruit trees and bee friendly flowering plants has contributed to the honey’s sweet yet floral taste.

2014 marks 75 years of the Citizens Advice service and the life-changing advice that the organisation provides.

As part of celebrations, Sainbury’s in Alphington Road is hosting a team of fundraisers from Exeter CAB on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 August.

Zoo keepers at Living Coasts in Torquay are teaching a tiny seal pup how to swim.

She had to be hand reared because her mother Grace was unable to produce milk. Now, keeper Libor Mach has taken to the water to give her swimming lessons.
