Zoo keeper goes APE for APE-ril

A big-hearted zoo keeper at Paignton Zoo has gone ape for Ape-ril in aid of orang utan conservation. Head Keeper of Mammals Craig Gilchrist has had his beard dyed orange by his barbers – The Groom Room, in Abbey Road, Torquay - as part of Ape-ril, a campaign run by the Sumatran Orangutan Society.

Craig, who is co-chair of a national zoo primate group, was keen to take part: “I want to raise awareness and money. Sumatran orang utans share 96.4% of our DNA, but they are Critically Endangered and on the edge of extinction.”

Zoo vets go digital

A wildlife charity has invested in new equipment to help its vet team treat animals more efficiently.

Paignton Zoo Environmental Park has purchased an x-ray digital scanner which has the potential to speed up animal care, reduce costs and make the work greener.

The AGFA CR30XM x-ray digital scanner has been supplied by Celtic SMR.

Ghislaine Sayers, Head of Veterinary Services for Paignton Zoo, explained: “It is better than our old style x-ray system in a number of ways. Running costs are minimal, as we don’t need to buy film or the chemicals required to develop it,...

£2,000 raised by Ashfords' Charity Quiz

Raising money can prove difficult but should always be fun - and so it was at Ashfords Plymouth office's hugely successful charity quiz last night at the City College Plymouth restaurant.

A record breaking £2,000 was for raised for our chosen Charity of the Year, Children's Hospice South West at the Plymouth Office's annual Charity Quiz.

Some 60 clients and contacts took part, including University of Plymouth, Sutton Harbour, City College Plymouth, Brewin Dolphin, Charles Stanley, Plymouth College of Art and many more.

Basepoint Exeter Sport Relief Cycle Challenge

Exeter have completed their part of the Basepoint Relay Cycle Challenge in aid of Sport Relief set by Basepoint HQ.

Each of the 30 Basepoint centres were challenged to cycle to the next nearest centre.

Centre Manager, John, and Assistant Centre Manager, Amy, on Tuesday cycled 62 miles between them... the equivalent of the distance between Basepoint Exeter and Basepoint Weymouth.

They then set the Exeter Licensees a challenge - to cycle the distance between the Basepoint Centres in Exeter, Weymouth, Bournemouth and Gosport - a total of 143 miles in a day.

Classical Concert in support of St Petrock's

Zumba for Headway Devon on Saturday

This Saturday (29 March) Headway Devon are hosting a fun-filled Zumba Party at Riverside Leisure Centre in Exeter to raise money for local people with brain injuries!

From 10-11am, qualified local instructor Johanna Morgan of JM DanceFit will be leading an hour-long Zumba class at the Riverside Leisure Centre, near Exeter Quay. The class is open for everyone to come along and enjoy and will be a great and sociable opportunity to burn some calories and try out a new activity.

Following the success of their 34th annual fireworks display at Westpoint on 5 November, Exeter Round Table has donated over £10,000 to locally connected charities.

Those receiving donations include Devon Air Ambulance Trust, St Loyes Foundation, 21st Exeter Scouts, Exeter Sea Cadets, Exeter Homeless Dinner, The Olive Tree Association, Southbrook School, Exeter Youth Orchestra, Kibera in Need, St Thomas Methodist Church and South West Water (on behalf of The Prince’s Trust).

Paignton Zoo staff save tiny rare baby

Dedicated keepers at Paignton Zoo are caring for a rare baby that weighed little more than a CD at birth.

The pygmy slow loris – which weighed just 22 grams when it was born - was one of twins born to a first-time mother. One twin did not survive, and keepers stepped in to save the other when its mother abandoned it.

For the first night head mammal keeper Craig Gilchrist slept in an office in the Zoo, feeding the minute youngster every couple of hours. It was given SMA gold cap milk replacer using a 1ml syringe and a small rubber teat.

Ben Bradshaw backs sign language celebration campaign

Exeter MP Ben Bradshaw, is one of many who have joined an online campaign this week, to celebrate British Sign Language (BSL).

The BSL Celebration Week Campaign run by Exeter Deaf Academy, SignUp BSL and Deafinite Interpreters hopes to get as many people as possible filming themselves signing their name.

The organisations have created a video guide to allow everyone to take part and all footage is shared over Facebook, Twitter and Pinterest. The week’s events can be followed using the hashtag #loveBSL

Solicitors support sizzling fundraiser for local cancer charity

On Thursday 3 April, Devon-based law firm Gilbert Stephens LLP will once again play host to the Great Devon Breakfast in aid of local cancer charity, FORCE.

The Great Devon Breakfast last year raised £10,000 across 17 different venues and the event, supported by Gilbert Stephens LLP, will be held at St Olaves Hotel located on Mary Arches Street, Exeter, at 8am. Breakfast costs just £8 and includes a full English with tea or coffee and organisers hope it will help raise around £500 for the local charity.
