Whodunnit? With the Agatha Christie Festival in full swing, the question is – who created the Poirot gorilla that’s been wowing shoppers in Torquay this summer?
This time it wasn’t the butler – it was the students of South Devon College.
They created a remarkable gorilla version of Agatha Christie's famous detective, Hercule Poirot, as part of Paignton Zoo’s Great Gorillas Project.
Celebrating the 90th birthday of Paignton Zoo, the project has put life-size model gorillas, sponsored by businesses and community groups and painted in original designs by specially...
On Friday 20 September, Living Coasts staff and volunteers will be at Beacon Cove for a beach clean.
They will be on the beach - right next to Living Coasts, Torquay’s coastal zoo - from 11.00am to 1.00pm. Everyone is welcome to join in and help keep our beaches and oceans clean and free from pollution.
Why is beach cleaning so important? Waste and litter in our seas are a constant threat to some of our best-loved marine wildlife. There is the constant danger of animals accidentally eating or becoming entangled in litter. In addition to marine wildlife, beach litter is also...
One local family has tracked down the full set of Great Gorillas – entirely by bus.
Lucy Sambell, from Exeter, her 13-year-old son Zachary and their two chocolate Labradors, father and son Murphy and Dooley, took two days to complete the free public art marathon.
The Great Gorillas Project is celebrating the 90th birthday of Paignton Zoo with 30 life-size model gorillas, sponsored by businesses and painted in original designs by specially-commissioned artists, placed around the streets and public spaces of Exeter and the English Riviera.

St David’s Singers was formed by the then organist of St David’s Church Exeter in the early 1970s, who directed the choir until Autumn 1994 when the baton was passed to Mark Perry.
The choir consists of about 28 singers who enjoy singing challenging music from a wide range of composers, periods and styles. We sing sacred and secular music, normally a cappella, in and around Devon, usually for charities.
The concert will benefit Hospital Radio Exeter.
Hospital Radio Exeter provides a wide variety of entertainment every day of the week from our studios within the...
Curator of Plants and Gardens Kevin Frediani is saying good bye to Paignton Zoo Environmental Park after five extraordinary years. He leaves a considerable legacy – but it is as much about people as plants.
Kevin grew up in Ashburton, on the edge of Dartmoor, and has worked for the Queen at Windsor Great Park and at Hortus Botanicus in the Netherlands. “Growing plants in a zoo full of animals is always a challenge – but I think I have helped to realise the potential of plants in what was the world’s first combined zoo and botanic garden.”
At the beginning of August 2013, James Berry and good friend Matt Fotheringham began the mammoth task of running the full length of France, from Le Havre in the north to Nice in the south, a total of 720 miles.
Their initial aim was to complete the challenge within the 31 days of August having run 630 miles, however their initial route had to change adding on 90 miles, despite this they managed to reach the finish line 5 days ahead of schedule.
Running with the bare essentials and camping almost every night, the boys completed this challenge relatively unsupported.
