Oldest book of English literature in the world available to browse online for the first time

One of the oldest books of English literature in the world - created more than 1,000 years ago - is now available for anyone to browse online for the first time.

The Exeter Book is one of the four most significant verse manuscripts to survive from the Anglo-Saxon period and contains the vast majority of all surviving Old English poetry. Its origins are a mystery.

UK for UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency’s UK charity, was recently joined by the nation’s favourite wordsmith Susie Dent to launch an important new campaign asking Britons, including those in Exeter to help compile a dictionary that will define only one word - “refugee” - but in thousands of different personal, emotive and thought-provoking ways.

Devon shoppers urged to donate to Tesco Food Collection.

Leading charities are urging Devon shoppers to donate food at their local Tesco to help support children and families across the UK this summer.

From July 15 to 17 Tesco is holding a summer Food Collection in aid of FareShare and the Trussell Trust at all of its large stores across the UK.

Shoppers are being urged to donate a variety of long-life foodstuffs to help FareShare supply thousands of community groups such as children’s holiday clubs and food pantries and help the Trussell Trust’s network of food banks provide emergency parcels to families in crisis.

Exeter City's big screen plans revealed

Plans for a giant new electronic screen at Exeter City Football Club’s ground, St James Park, have been submitted to the city council.

As part of major improvements this summer, the club plans to install the 8.64 x 5.12 metre (29 x 17 feet) LED scoreboard towards the corner behind the St James Road away end, nearest the recently built Stagecoach Adam Stansfield Stand.

Subject to approval by Exeter City Council’s planning department, the screen could be installed before the opening home League Two fixture of the season against Bradford City on Saturday 7 August.

Devon taking action to remove Ash dieback infected trees

Urgent action is being taken to remove almost 1,500 Ash dieback infected trees from alongside Devon's major road network this summer in order to protect public safety on the county's roads.

Devon County Council has already started an essential programme of work, with almost 150 infected trees alongside the A388 at Holsworthy currently being felled. From Monday (12 July) work will start on the A399 at Brayford to remove 220 trees with Ash dieback that are within falling distance of the highway.

It's the first time since the pandemic that Devon County Council has printed the timetables, covering all of the districts across Devon and all service operators.

The information in the printed booklets is the most up-to-date available, but service times can change.
