Have you ever bought a postcard as a souvenir of a visit? Over two hundred years ago, cousins Jane and Mary Parminter from A la Ronde did just that.
While on their grand tour of Europe they collected 39 Gouaches and a fan from Mount Vesuvius. These will be on display at the 16-sided property throughout May as part of a ‘Hidden House’ programme which showcases items in the collection that visitors cannot usually see.
Gouaches are much like modern day postcards. They were printed from engravings and then coloured using a transparent paint called Gouache. With their passion...
Take a step back in time at A la Ronde this month and discover more about Victorian innovations in the sixteen-sided house; including gas lamps, speaking tubes, the central heating system, a water tower, laundry and a dumb waiter.
A la Ronde is providing specific information about each of these items and looking at ways to make them more interactive for families and visitors. For example, areas of the dumb waiter that are usually closed have been opened up, the gas lamps have been lit in the entrance and dining room and an area has been set up outside the laundry for children to...

A young visitor to Exmouth thought she had seen the last of her savings and treasured possessions when she threw some litter into a seafront rubbish bin – and her purse went in as well!
But the following day East Devon District Council was able to return the purse to a delighted Karis Atkins.
The town’s new ‘Big Belly’ bins have a rotating drawer front and the contents are compressed by a solar-powered ram. So there was no chance of Karis reaching into the bin to retrieve the lost purse.
Karis, a 16-year-old student from Exeter, was enjoying a day out with friends...
Anyone going to the south coast of Devon this May would be advised to be prepared for some swashbuckling as pirates will be everwhere; from Brixham to Plymouth, stopping off for a knees-up at Exmouth Rugby Club.
Scrumpstock, a cider festival which celebrates keeping Devon’s apple varieties and traditional pressing methods alive, will join in the notorious seafarers’ fun with its own Pirate Day on the final of three days of music, family entertainments, activities and opportunities to discover an ever-expanding selection of ciders.
With warmer weather on its way, reptiles will be waking from their winter sleep and coming out to bask in the sun.
East Devon District Council countryside team is offering two opportunities to join them on a reptile ramble on the heathland nature reserves at Fire Beacon Hill and Trinity Hill.
The team’s rangers will show you to spot and identify our native snakes and lizards.
Two walks are available:
Wednesday 1 April – Fire Beacon Hill Local Nature Reserve near Sidbury 8.30am – 10.30am
Wednesday 8 April – Trinity Hill Local Nature Reserve near...
On a bleak November day in London in 1993, Paul was pondering how to break the albumpromotiontour routine that to be honest, was becoming a little predictable after 10 years of being a solo performer. And anyways, he missed the camaraderie of just being a band member…. So he called around some of his friends and members of his previous line-ups through the years to find out who would be interested in forming a loose, relaxed Tex-Mex group for some impromptu gigs. This music, from the working class bars of West Texas, brought the atmosphere of the sun soaked expanse of the great state of...
