£40,000 grant for St Petrock's

St Petrock’s, Exeter’s charity for people who are homeless, has received further funding for its Private Rented Service which, so far, has successfully accommodated and continues to support 62 individuals who were previously homeless, in the local area.

The award has been made by Crisis, the national homelessness charity, as a result of additional government funding and aims to help 2,250 people who are homeless, over the next two years, by financially supporting projects around the country, like St Petrock’s in Exeter.

With only a week and a half to go until Sleep Easy, Exeter YMCA is delighted to announce that Radio Exe will be the official media sponsor of this year's event.

2,082 children in the South West are homeless and living in temporary accommodation, according to the latest government figures.

The new statistics recorded at the end of September mean that, across Britain, nearly 85,000 children now face the reality of waking up homeless this Christmas morning. Shelter is warning that as the rising cost of living and cuts to the housing safety net continue to take their toll, many more parents are likely to find themselves facing an ongoing struggle to keep a roof over their children’s heads.

On 29 and 30 July, members of Exeter Youth Squad took part in a sponsored 24-hour famine to raise money for Exeter-based charity St Petrock’s.

The group of 13- to 19-year-olds are raising awareness of homelessness in and around the city as part of a community action project devised by the young people themselves over the past few months.

Funding boost to tackle homelessness and empty homes blight

Homeless people in Teignbridge are being given the chance to live in their own home after Teignbridge District Council gained a £100,000 Government funding boost. Teignbridge has been given the Empty Homes Programme funding by the Homes and Communities Agency to bring empty homes back into use as affordable properties. Sponsored Sleepover Raises £23,000 for Exeter's YMCA

A sponsored sleep out in Exeter city centre on Saturday night raised over £23,000 for Exeter YMCA’s work with local homeless young people.

180 people took part in the sleep out, called ‘Sleep Easy’, battling against lows of three degrees Celsius and torrential rain. Participants included six members from the Gilbert Stephens Young Professional Network who raised over £1,000 for the charity. Gilbert Stephens were also the main sponsors of the event.

Nightstop launches Spare Room Campaign in Devon

Nightstop Devon, a local charity project, is today launching a 'Spare Room Campaign' in partnership with other Nightstops around the country.

The campaign is in response to the recent huge rises in youth homelessness across the UK of up to 300%.

Nightstop hosts provide emergency accommodation to young people in the homes of volunteer hosts, members of the public who have a spare room in their house.
