Luke Daniels

09/12/2014 - 8:00pm
Venue:

‘Good folk songs are like dangerous ideas, forcing us to re-imagine who we are and the institutions that support us.’

Folk singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, Luke Daniels’ talents as a singer-songwriter are becoming widely recognised. Immaculate acoustic guitar playing and insightful, honest lyrics exploring love, life, doubt and faith and the idea that happiness and hope spring from what we have in common, rather than what we can acquire as individuals.

Over the course of a twenty-year career Daniels has already earned his place on the UK Folk scene as a virtuoso...

08/12/2014 - 8:00pm
Venue:
Exeter Phoenix

Two innovative musical pals, both established solo folk artists in their own right, come together from their respective corners of Britain for a night of sparkling acoustic tunes.

The Pictish Trail is the nom de plume of Johnny Lynch, a Scottish musician who spent some time running Fence Records alongside Kenny Anderson (King Creosote). His music is a sonorous mixture of acoustic-driven balladry and lo-fi synthesised pop, that has been described as ‘a post-summer trove of sun-warped electro, anamorphic folk’ (Plan B Magazine).

Sweet Baboo is Stephen Black, a native of the...

Beans on Toast with support from Lori Campbell and Will Varley

Drunk folk singer, barefoot troubadour and cult legend Beans on Toast has been around the block more times than he cares to remember. Thankfully though, with his unique blend of simple songs and no holds barred quick wit, he is an act that is anything but tired.

With a fresh spring in his step after an incredible start to the year, which saw him conquer his first American headline tour, play a series of shows with Flogging Molly in the US and perform to over 40,000 people in just one week whilst opening Frank...

Hold it Down presents Sigma + Support

Leeds University alumni, international chart toppers SIGMA met while balancing raving and studying, working in record shops and promoting events to top up their student loans. While some don their artist mantle when the occasion demands it, Cameron and Joe have made SIGMA their ‘life’ since graduation.

Early releases with Hospital Records, Viper, Bingo and DJ Fresh’s Breakbeat Kaos, as well as their own Life Recordings, quickly marked them out as producers to watch, while remixes for Eric Prydz, Ellie Goulding, Stylo G and Sway began to...

Spiro

Event Date:
04/12/2014 - 8:00pm
Venue:

Spiro are something of a slippery beast when it comes to being contained by mere words. Guitarist Jon Hunt has a go.

‘Weʼve got as much to do with minimalist classical and dance music as we have with folk. Even though we use folk tunes, theyʼre raw materials that the rest of the sound is built around.’

One thing is certain – Spiro are their own people, commendably operating in their own sphere and at their own pace. This contemporary acoustic ensemble first came together through Bristolʼs folk sessions scene in 1993, trading under the name of The Famous Five. All four...
