Daniel O'Donnell cancels Plymouth concert to be with critically ill Father-in-law

This Friday’s Daniel O’Donnell concert at Plymouth Pavilions has been cancelled, along with the remainder of his UK tour.

Unfortunately, Daniel’s Father-in-law is critical in hospital with a suspected brain hemorrhage, and so understandably Daniel has had no choice but to cancel his shows, for which both Daniel and his management offer their sincere apologies.

Potential breakthrough in treating neurodegenerative conditons

Scientists may have taken the first steps in finding a treatment for conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. A study published in the journal Science Transitional Medicine claimed that researchers had managed to halt brain cell death in mice. Although potentially decades from a human application the study indicates that medicine which halts brain cell death is in the realms of possibility. The scientists induced a neurodegenerative condition in the mice using abnormal prion proteins which produces an approximation of human neurodegenerative disorders.

First Great Western secures new deal to operate train services in the South West

The government has announced that First Great Western Ltd will continue to operate trains between London Paddington and the south west until September 2015.

First Group's First Great Western (FGW) company has reached agreement with the government to continue running the franchise to operate trains between London Paddington, the Cotswolds, south Wales and the South West.

Plans to start new local television channels in Devon

Devon may soon get two new local television channels according to regulator Ofcom.

Locations across the UK, including Plymouth and Barnstaple, are slated to gain independent channels making original programming.

Ofcom is inviting applications from independent studios to get a licence to found the new channels for a local audience.

Eleven more licences were announced today as part of an ongoing process of applications.

PCC brings cost of alcohol-related crime to top of agenda

Police and crime commissioner Tony Hogg has vowed to put the cost of alcohol-related crime at the top of his agenda.

With the bill currently running at more than £300m in Devon and Cornwall Mr Hogg called upon all organisations affected by the booze culture to create a strategy to reduce both the cost and the effect on society. Police Officers to cycle from Exeter to London in charity bike challenge

A group of 21 police officers will be cycling from Exeter to London in aid of a local cancer charity this weekend.

The men will start their challenge from police headquarters in Exeter at 4am on Sunday 15 September and should reach their destination by tea time.

The 170-mile ride, which has been organised by PC Dean Drury and PC Chris Rennie, is expected to take around 12 hours with a few stops on the way.

The police officers, based all around Devon and Cornwall, aim to raise over £500 for the FORCE Cancer Charity in Exeter.

Allergy Conference aims to improve diagnosis and treatment

Across the globe, cases of allergy are significantly increasing. An estimated 21 million people in the UK now suffer from an allergy, with at least one in three people affected at some time in their lives. In Devon and Cornwall, that equates to around 600,000 people.

A conference hosted by the University of Exeter Medical School will bring together a range of experts in the field to analyse the evidence and advise health professionals on how best to diagnose and treat an increasingly wide range of allergic reactions.

Toddler "stable" after fall from fifth-floor window in Plymouth flat

A 16-month-old toddler is described as being in a "serious but stable condition" in Derriford Hospital after falling more than 100ft (30 metres) from a fifth-floor flat on Saturday morning.

The girl, who has not been named, suffered internal injuries after the fall from the window of her home just off Savage Road, in the Barne Barton area of Plymouth.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the scene of the incident which happened just before 8.30am on Saturday 7 July. The little girl was quickly taken to hospital.

Warning of heavy rain and possible floods in the region on Saturday

The Met Office has issued a yellow warning of rain for the region, including Plymouth, on Saturday (7 September), with the risk of possible localised flooding.

The warning highlights "periods of heavy and persistent rain

"The public should be aware that there is a risk of localised disruption due to flooding.

"Some flooding from rivers or surface water is possible. There is still significant uncertainty as to where and when the heaviest rainfall and greatest impacts will occur and this alert will be updated on Friday."
