Tiverton man charged with driving under the influence of drugs

A 42-year-old man from Tiverton has been charged with driving a motor vehicle whilst unfit through drugs following an incident in Exeter on 11 November 2011.

Officers went to the car park of the RD&E in Barrack Road just before 6pm following a 'Concern for welfare' call from a member of the public. There they found the suspect and arrested him on suspicion of being unfit in charge of a car.

Tiverton man dies six days after collision on the A361

A 48-year-old man, now identified as Steven Tolley from Tiverton, died yesterday at Derriford Hospital following a collistion on the A361 on 29th January. Mr Tolley was working for South West Highways at the time.

Police and the Health and Safety Executive are conducting an investigation into the collision.

Officers have renewed their appeal for witnesses to the collision and would particularly like to speak to those who saw the Iveco van in the area at the time or how and where the men were working in the road.

Council pledges £3 million to repair Grand Western Canal

Devon County Council is pledging up to £3 million to repair and modernise the Grand Western Canal.

Council leader John Hart said the money would be included in the authority’s capital budget which will be examined next week.

The decision follows the catastrophic breach of the canal wall at Halberton in November following torrential downpours.

Mr Hart said today: “This is an historic feature with many listed structures along its length.

Travellers on the B3137 should be very wary

Recently accidents on the road from Tiverton to Witheridge have been frequent and nasty.

On Monday 7th of January there was a head-on crash between Withleigh and Page's Cross, leaving the two cars involved in pieces. Today there have been rumours of a crash just outside of Petroc College in Tiverton.

And at around midday there was nearly a fatal accident near Cruwys Morchard woods, again. An elderly man was waiting to turn into Page's Cross this morning, when a reckless driver smashed straight into the back of him.

Police appeal following burglary in Sampford Peverell

Police are appealing for information after a number of items of jewellery were taken in a burglary in Sampford Peverell, near Tiverton.

The house in Higher Town was broken into between 11am on Friday 21 December and 2.30pm on Wednesday 26 December. The occupants are a couple in their 60s.

A number of items were stolen including a valuable 18-carat gold ladies ring with rubies and diamonds, several other gold and silver rings and a Panasonic 26in flat screen TV.

Liberal Democrats elect new Leader for 2013

Devon County Council Lib Dem Leader Brian Greenslade has announced he is stepping aside as Group Leader ahead of County elections in May 2013 after 23 years in the post.

He will be succeeded by Tiverton East County Councillor Des Hannon (pictured) with effect from the new year.

Councillor Greenslade will continue as Chairman of the Corporate Services Scrutiny and as leader of North Devon Council.

Exeter to Tiverton line is re-opened

The Exeter to Tiverton line was re-opened this afternoon after engineering teams finished repairs following the floods.

Passengers had to take buses between Tiverton Parkway and Exeter St David's after the River Exe burst its banks Cowley Bridge Junction on Saturday.

Network Rail said a normal service would now resume.

However, services between Exeter St David's and Exmouth are disrupted due to flooding in the Lympstone area.

Services will start and terminate at Topsham with road transport operating between Topsham and Stations to Exmouth in both directions...

Information gathering event about Grand Western Canal

Communities along the Grand Western Canal are being invited to a fact-finding meeting to establish events that led to the breach of the canal last month.

Following the flood drop-in sessions which are currently being held across the county to gather information on the November floods, Devon County Council is organising a similar event to focus on the Grand Western Canal.

The session will be held at Halberton Village Hall on Thursday (20th December) from 4pm until 8pm.

Delays continue on trains between Exeter and Tiverton

The recent flooding in the South West is continuing to cause disruption to train journeys between Exeter St Davids and Tiverton Parkway.

Because of this, there are delays of up to 25 minutes between Exeter St Davids and Tiverton Parkway. These delays will continue until further notice.

A small number of CrossCountry trains will not run between Bristol Temple Meads and Exeter St Davids / Plymouth / Penzance today.
