Anguish at the scene of fatal crash
There was anguish etched on the faces of motorists and pedestrians as they passed the spot where a 12--year-old died after being in collision with a lorry.
The boy was crossing Topsham Road close to the Countess Wear roundabout when the accident happened.
He was treated at the scene but died soon after from his injuries.
Many drivers waiting at the traffic lights where bouquets are starting to appear shook or bowed their heads in sorrow.
Some pedestrians, including a mother with her own young son, stopped to read the tributes in silent contemplation.
One, who was visibly shocked, clutched her chest and placed her hand over her mouth.
A resident waiting at the nearby bus stop with her children said there had been concerns in the area about the road, which many people felt was dangerous due to its layout.
The road was closed for five hours while serious collision investigators carried out an examination of the scene. The lorry driver was uninjured.
Police are carrying out an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the collision and are appealing for any witnesses to contact them on 101, quoting log 480 of 28/08/2014.
