An Exeter School former pupil has won the prestigious Target Jobs Construction Engineering and Design Undergraduate of the Year Award 2014.

2010 leaver Brittany Harris, who is studying Civil Engineering at the University of Bristol, was presented with the award by Sir Trevor McDonald OBE at a ceremony in Canary Wharf, London last week.

She wins an international summer work placement and will spend three months with Laing O'Rourke in Hong Kong, before returning to university for her final year.

Brittany is vice president of EWB (Engineers Without Borders) Bristol and runs a branch partnership with FRANK Water, a Bristol-based initiative that funds sustainable clean water projects in developing countries across the world.

She has successfully applied for the Royal Academy of Engineering's Leadership Award and is using this to travel and develop her language skills so she can gain a better understanding of different cultures.

Brittany completed a series of online tests, application forms, interviews and assessment exercises to emerge as winner with a second Exeter School alumnus coming a close second.

2010 Exeter School leaver Tom Cherrett is currently in his fourth year at the University of Bath studying for a Masters in Civil Engineering and is a finalist in the Undergraduate of the Year 2014 competition.

Tom spent last year on an industrial placement working for a structural consultancy in Bristol, designing a school in Scotland made from cross laminated timber, an award winning artist studio and other houses and offices across the country.

This summer he plans to travel Central America and work for a contractor to gain further experience before graduating next year.
