7 Great Ways to Say You’re Sorry
#1 – The Straightforward Approach
One of the best ways of saying you’re sorry is to not beat around the bush and say how remorseful you really are. Don’t be defensive of your actions or what you said, and don’t try to downplay what happened. Also avoid the cardinal mistake of blaming the other person for your actions. Accept the fact that you were in the wrong, and make sure that you express it properly.
#2 – Write a Poem
If you are a creative person, you could write a poem or a song which shows how you feel. The key is to keep it simple, yet expressive. In case you are not able to come up with an original composition, feel free to use a famous song for inspiration, preferably one that the other person likes. Even if you are not a great singer or writer, the fact that you are willing to put in the effort should be able go a long way in making the other person forgive you.
#3 – List Out Their Importance
Make a short list of five or six reasons which explain why the other person is an important part of your life. Add a note saying something like “I’ve always known why you are so special to me. I can’t believe I forgot about these amazing reasons today and let you down. Please forgive me for saying the wrong things; things which caused you so much pain.”
#4 – Create a Collage
Creating a collage of the fun pictures you have together is a great way of reminding the other person, and yourself, of how valuable the relationship is. You don’t even need to have any craft skill to make collages either. There are a number of free resources on the internet which let you create amazing pieces extremely quickly. Gift it to your mate, and be sure to add a personal message.
#5 – Buy Flowers
Depending on the kind of relationship you have with the other person, flowers can be a great way of showing how sorry you are. Get them a bouquet of their favorite flowers, and add a note saying how sorry you are. Adding an extra gift, like a box of chocolates, could be a great idea as well. If you can’t find a bouquet for some reason, try getting a single flower. Flowers are an ideal gift for someone you are romantically involved with.
#6 – Make a Donation
If the other person has a keen interest in social causes, you could consider making a significant donation to his/her favorite charity. Hand them the receipt and tell them that you have made a donation to a cause that is near to their heart in the hope that it makes them aware of how truly sorry you are, or something similar. Be careful to not make it sound like the donation is a bribe intended for getting forgiveness.
#7 – Hug
Sometimes, physical affection says much more than words ever can. If you want to show how remorseful you are, you should consider just giving the other person a warm hug. It is hard to stay mad at someone who has just hugged you, and scientific research has shown that hugs can relieve depression, anxiety, stress, etc. and promote happiness. The key to a great apology is to accept the fact that you have done something wrong. If you believe that you haven’t done anything to say sorry about, nothing you say or do will be convincing enough.
