#1 – Work

A person’s job is often a constant source of stress in his/her life. People worry about many work related things such as being replaced, the company closing down or letting employees go, getting passed over for a promotion, pay cuts, etc. There is also the stress caused by taking on additional responsibilities. Even though work-related stress can be brought on by others, people often put more pressure on themselves.

#2 – Financial Stress

A large number of studies have shown that finances are the leading cause of stress in most people. Financial stress often comes from making large purchases such as a home or a car. Other causes of financial anxiety include mounting credit card debt, loss of employment, etc. It also depends on the age of an individual. While college students tend to worry over educational debt, senior citizens consider their retirement income a major source of tension.

#3 – Family Stress

Family plays a valuable and important role in the life of an individual. However, it could be a source of stress as well. Arguments with spouses or other family members, major events such as injury, pregnancy, miscarriage, etc. are all stressors. For children, fights between their parents, divorce, etc. could all lead to a great amount of stress.

#4 – Personal Wellbeing

Many people find their personal health and well-being to be a leading cause of stress. Depending on their current physical condition, people worry about putting on weight, losing weight, falling ill, etc. The stress of not being able to take care of one’s body due to the demands of their work, family and life in general causes both mental and physical fatigue.

#5 – Toxic Relationships

Everyone knows that loving relationships have a calming effect on the body. However, if you are in the company of people you don’t really like, your nervous system treats it as danger, leading to increased physical and mental stress levels. In fact, it is better to be alone than be with people you don’t approve of.

#6 – Death of Loved Ones

The death of a loved one can be a source of great stress as you lose someone you love. Additionally, during the mourning process, you might have to handle other tasks such as organizing the funeral, handling finances, etc. which could be extremely stressful. This is why many people choose to delegate such tasks. Even the death of a pet can be stressful and unbearable.

#7 – Childhood Trauma

Some people experience long-term stress due to some trauma they experienced during their childhood. If left untreated, this could last throughout the individual’s life, causing both physical and mental problems. Children who live with an alcoholic or drug-abusing parent, or grow up in an abusive environment tend to suffer more psychological stress throughout their adult lives, when compared to children growing up in a loving family.
