It would be amazing if every day of our lives was a good hair day. Unfortunately, there are people – mostly women for sure – who are not pleased with their hair type. Sometimes, bad washing techniques, too much hair product, and a wrong hair style can make you look ten times worse. The good news is that there are smart ways you can use to keep your thatch  under control.

Here are 10 tips everyone can try  – without breaking the bank – to keep your hair looking great:

#1 Don’t wash your hair daily

Stylists and dermatologists agree that there’s no reason for someone to wash their hair daily. Hair is more like a fiber, such as wool for example. The more you choose to wash it, the worse it will look. Longer, curlier, thicker hair can go longer between washes and here’s why: the oils from your scalp don’t have time to travel down the shaft that quickly, so your hair will look clean and fresh for longer periods of time (2-3 days). Even the shortest type of hair can wait at least 24 hours between washes. Experts do mention that only really oily hair needs daily shampooing.

#2 Shampoo and conditioner are a must

The shampooing process should start only after the hair has been properly rinsed with water. Don’t use your nails to massage the scalp, use your fingertips and apply soft circular movements. Clean with water and apply a conditioner. Why is conditioner so important? Because it helps preserve (put back) the hair’s natural oils that are being stripped out by the shampoo. A good conditioner de-tangles the hair when it’s wet and it protects it from vulnerable processes such as ironing, curling, and so on.

#3 Don’t use too many styling products

Too many styling products will dry the scalp. Limit yourself to a light hair spray or mousse, but try not to use both. Keep the products you’re using far away from the scalp to avoid dandruff, and get to know the brand you’re about to use. There are numerous companies out there that use harsh ingredients to make hair products, and although most hairsprays don’t contain methylene chloride anymore, there are still some formulations that can cause side effects.

#4 Weekly hair treatments

The best hair treatments are made from all-natural ingredients you can buy yourself. Use avocado oil, argan oil, olive oil in combination with lemon and raw eggs to make your hair glow. Make a mix using the mentioned ingredients, apply it on the dry hair and wait 8-9 hours for the treatment to work. Use a hair mask if you’re taking a nap. The end result will blow you away. Apart from having regenerative properties, these oils are meant to nurture the hair and make it more resistant too.

#5 Professional hair products are the best

Most modern women use a flat iron or a blow drier to style their hair on a daily basis. If you’re not choosing the right products, that perfect hairdo from 7 o’clock in the morning will fade away in 2 hours. The secret to a long-lasting hairstyle is to invest in quality hair products. They’re a bit more expensive but a mousse that uses a keratin base will be a lot more appropriate for your scalp than that cheap £5 product you bought from the supermarket. Ask a specialist for advice and your hair will look great 24/7.

#6 Monthly hair cuts

All women want to have long, beautiful hair. Most of them refuse to go to a hair salon to have their ends cut because they’re scared a specialist will hack too much. A hairdresser knows exactly what your hair needs, so if he decides to trim 10 inches, it’s because the hair is extremely damaged. Let’s face it, split ends are so unappealing. As much as you don’t want to cut them, it’s important to make that sacrifice if you want others to admire your healthy locks. Monthly haircuts are important, even if you’re making an appointment to have 1 inch trimmed. You can always apply for a treatment too and rejuvenate your scalp.

#7 Wash your hair with cold water

A cool rinse will seal in moisture and close the cuticles. It’s ok to remove the shampoo with warm water, but at the end of the washing process, switch it up to cold water. The skin pores will be closed, which means your hair will protect itself from damaging substances that may lead to negative reactions. As an added benefit, the hair will be silkier, shinier and healthier.

#8 Braiding keeps the hair healthy

Braiding your hair every once in a while is an excellent way of keeping it healthy. Some styles are chic and trendy, so it’s always a good idea to watch some DIY tutorials to make your thatch stand out. Braiding is also an all-natural way of curling your hair without damaging it. Fishtail hairstyles are in trend right now; they’re romantic and suitable for all types of facial features.

#9 A balanced diet will help keep your hair healthy

Not many people eat healthy to keep their hair healthy too. Yet, it’s extremely important to nourish your body from the inside to make it look good on the outside as well. That being said, your diet should include a lot of vegetables and fruits. Make sure you’re eating clean; cut back on your French fries and replace soda juices with fresh juices. Proper food feeds the body with vitamins and minerals, and it makes it glow. That glow will be reflected on your skin, nails, and hair.

#10 Challenge yourself – no hairstyle products for 30 days

You may not like this tip, but it’s highly recommended. Challenge yourself and try not to use any types of styling products for 30 days. Stick to shampoo and conditioner every 2-3 days, let it dry naturally, and if you don’t like the natural aspect of your hair, braid it. It’s the best way to help it rejuvenate. Use all-natural treatments to nourish it and just take a break from your beloved flat iron. You’ll love the end result. After 30 days your hair won’t just be healthier; it will be longer and a lot shinier.
