What’s the best way to procure IT support?
Networking was a bit of a theme at the Exeter and East Devon Business Club event at the Deer Park Hotel in October. Not only was there the usual networking lunch with local business professionals, but there was also a valuable presentation from Michael Mertens of Mertens Consulting on how to procure IT support to keep your critical IT networks running reliably.
During his presentation Michael exploded a few common myths and exposed some of the inappropriate advice that small businesses often receive from ‘experts’. His personal favourite was the ‘stronger aerial’ solution for a slow WiFi network, which, of course, does nothing to relieve a slow or overloaded internet connection.
Michael’s main advice was for businesses to be clear about what they needed. Is it a support contract with guaranteed fast response or is it a consulting solution to ensure IT systems are set up in the most efficient way?
Looking into the experience and track record of potential suppliers is critical and being Microsoft certified, on its own, means very little. The Business Club is an informal networking group that meets each month at the Deer Park hotel. There’s a pleasant lunch and the opportunity to build valuable relationships with a wide range of local businesses.
There’s no membership fee and the group is run on a strictly not for profit basis. New members are always made very welcome. Our next event is on November 27 and features a talk from Sophie Hodge of Exeter YMCA on Corporate Social Responsibility. Book your place here: http://www.eventbrite.com/event/3641557998
