Bright Futures' talent on show at accountants' event

A unique talent event for promoting teamwork skills among young accountants recently took place at Exeter University.

The X-Factor-inspired show called "Bishop Fleming's Got Talent" was the culmination of many months of work by the Bright Futures team of the Top 40 firm, made up of members of an innovative 12-month personal development and mentoring programme, who were given an opportunity to shine in front of their peers.

On stage at the university's Forum building were a mixture of live and recorded performances covering dance, singing, stage show scenes, and even a future star in the making - a dachshund named Alfie. There were also non-performance entries showcasing the arts, crafts and baking. All the performers had progressed through from local heats held at Bishop Fleming's seven offices in Bath, Bristol, Exeter, Plymouth, Torquay, Truro, and Worcester.

Producing the show, which also included choir workshops and various team-building games, took months of preparation by the Bright Futures crew. This helped them develop their skills in communication, teamwork and problem solving - important skills needed for the business leaders of the future and for delivering quality client service.

Caroline Smale, Bishop Fleming Partner and Head of the firm's Training and Compliance division, said: "It is important for people to develop above and beyond the usual standard skills needed for the job. Fostering skills that aren't focussed on in normal accountancy training allows our staff to become much rounder people and engenders a more holistic approach to client service - which is very much part of the firm's culture."

Bishop Fleming is ranked 49th in the Sunday Times Top 100 places to work, accredited as an "outstanding" employer.
