Business is booming at Exeter's resurgent Quayside with local traders reporting good times at the tills, as more and more events are held at the city attraction.

With only six months of the year gone , the popular location has already hosted 77 events. In 2015, 81 events were held at the Quay and in 2014 the figure was 50, meaning 2016 is set smash previous records.

Among the events taking place this summer are regattas, raft and dragon boat races on the water, Jazz on the Quay, Exeter Street Food Markets and many more.

One of the main reasons for the good news has been the Custom House Visitor Centre, whose staff have prioritised increasing the number of events at the Quayside. This popularity has been welcomed by local traders.

Annie Samuels, of the Jolly Roger Tearoom, said: We really welcome these additional events and have definitely noticed more custom on the days when these have been held."

Heather Baker, of Saddles & Paddles, was equally pleased: "Our reputation as a bike shop and repair centre has strengthened, with strong bike sales and our workshop services in high demand."

At the nearby Custom House Visitor Centre, figures have increased significantly. Last year 27,846 people came through the doors of the 17th Century building compared to 25,131 in 2014 and 24,732 the year before.

Cllr Rosie Denham, Lead Councillor for Economy and Culture, said that was all good news for Exeter.

"We've always been extremely proud to have the Quayside on our doorstep and it really is one of the jewels in Exeter's crown.

"The number of events at the Quayside and Piazza has really taken off and not only is that good news for the local traders but it's another shop window for Exeter and showing people the rich variety that this great city has to offer."
