Businesses are being asked to play their part in keeping Exeter city centre clean by making sure they present their waste for collection at the right time on the correct day.

A lot of street litter results from waste sacks that are left out on the street for too long before collection.  This can look unsightly and divert street cleaning resources away from other urgent tasks.

Cllr Stephen Brimble, Lead Councillor for Place, said: “The vast majority of businesses in Exeter are presenting their bins at the right time and in the right place but unfortunately, like everything, there is a small minority that is letting the city down.

“A street full of rubbish with waste spilling out of ripped bags can be a real turn off for visitors to Exeter and bad for business. It’s not pleasant and it’s not necessary. For the sake of a sticking to few regulations we can keep the city’s streets looking good and rubbish free.”

Wherever possible, waste should be stored and presented in a wheelie bin or seagull-deterrent sack.  If rubbish or recycling sacks have to be used because of a lack of space for storing a container, businesses should check with their collection service provider about the days and times of collection to avoid sacks being left out at the wrong time.

Trade waste shouldn’t be left out all night and bin lids should be flush with the bin. Pavements and roads should be kept clear and not be blocked by bins and rubbish.

Businesses that fail to make suitable arrangements for the presentation and collection of their waste can face enforcement action under the Environmental Protection Act, including the issuing of fixed penalty notices.

There are a number of waste service providers – including the City Council - operating in Exeter, providing businesses with a choice of competitively-priced rubbish and recycling collection services.

“At the end of the day it’s about all pulling together for the greater good of the city,” said Cllr Brimble.
