Devon country parks among best in UK

Two of Devon’s favourite parks have been named among the best green spaces in the UK.

The Grand Western Canal Country Park and Stover County Park, which are both managed by Devon County Council, have once again scooped the prestigious Green Flag Award from the environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy.

The award, which is currently celebrating its 20th year, recognises and rewards the best green parks and spaces across the country.

The County Council’s parks are among a record-breaking, 1,686 green spaces that will be flying the flag this year as a proud sign to the public that their space is beautifully maintained, has excellent facilities and boasts the highest possible standards.

Cllr Roger CroadCllr Roger Croad, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for the two country parks, said:

“I am so pleased that our wonderful parks have received Green Flag Awards again.

“This award recognises and highlights that people in Devon are benefitting from a green space of the very highest quality.”

Councillor Des Hannon, Devon County Council’s Cabinet Member for Tiverton East, said: “The Grand Western Canal is over 200 years old and still at the top of its game. Getting a Green Flag confirms now is a great time to visit our canal country park. We’re very proud of this wonderful place and very happy to share it with everyone. Come one, come all.”

Mid Devon District Councillor Ray Radford said: “I speak for everyone in Mid Devon when I say how grateful we are to the Rangers and their volunteer helpers for their efforts. I am so pleased that it has all paid off and yet again they have been award a Green Flag.

“This shows Devon County`s commitment to the canal and the value of maintaining funding through these austerity times.

“It is maintaining the high profile of our wonderful canal and the benefits of attracting visitors to the wider community of Mid Devon and supporting local businesses”.

International Green Flag award scheme manager Paul Todd said: “All the flags flying this year are a testament to the efforts of the thousands of men and women, both staff and volunteers, who work tirelessly to maintain the high standards demanded by the Green Flag Award”

The Awards are judged by over 700 volunteers who visit sites across the country and assess them against strict criteria, including horticultural standards, cleanliness, sustainability and community involvement.
