Get ready for this on Bridge Road Exeter!
Temporary traffic lights will be introduced on Bridge Road in Exeter overnight on Monday and Tuesday evening next week to carry out changes to the lane closures.
From 11pm on Monday (18 April) until 5am the next morning and the same period overnight on Tuesday (19 April), traffic lights will be in place on short lengths of the road. This will allow the contractor to change the traffic management layout to a two-way traffic contraflow on the Bascule Bridge.
Anyone travelling at this time can expect delays, including limited periods of up to 10 minutes when the lights are set to ‘all-red’ in order to move construction plant.
The road is already reduced to two lanes for the duration of the scheme and the change in layout will provide working space for the next phases of work on the Swing Bridge and the embankments approaching the railway.
Pedestrians and cyclists will be able to access Bridge Road during these overnight periods, although they may be marshalled through the works, and therefore they are urged to take care and follow instructions from the site staff.
From 5am on Tuesday 19th April, all vehicles will use the contraflow on the Bascule Bridge - the bridge with the metal framework and counterweight above the road.
Where the road rises over the railway line, the traffic lanes will be made narrower than at present, and the foot/cyclepath will be moved, behind barriers, into what is currently road space. The contractor will then start road widening in this area.
The schedule for the changes to the traffic management are subject to weather – dry conditions are needed on Monday night in order to install new white-line markings on the road. The new layout may be delayed by a day or so if conditions are wet.
