An electric car revolution has arrived to help people access smart shared electric cars for a fraction of the cost of owning.

It will help improve the air quality in Exeter and bring the city into the forefront for shared electric mobility.

Exeter and the far South West’s first shared electric car launches today with Co-cars, the hire by the hour car network.

The electric Renault Zoe is the first of a growing fleet of electric cars which will be parked at on-street locations next to its own electric charger. This first one is in Albatross Road, Newcourt, Exeter. It is available for just £4.75 per hour and FREE mileage.

This will make Exeter at the forefront for shared electric mobility, being only the second city in the UK to have on-street self service electric cars and bikes.

The Renault Zoe complements Co-cars’ wider range of almost 30 hybrid and low emission cars in Exeter and across the far South West and its Co-bikes shared electric bike network in Exeter. Co-cars is the only company in the UK offering such a joint solution.

The shared zero emission electric cars and bikes not only helps meet Exeter’s Air Quality challenges but helps reduce congestion too as they can help reduce the number of cars on the road.

Funding for the electric car has been provided by Co-cars and Exeter City Council through contributions from David Wilson Homes.

Managing Director Mark Hodgson said “Co-cars is growing in Exeter and we are really pleased to be adding electric vehicles to our already low emission / hybrid fleet. Cars are only used 3% of the time yet cost £000’s to buy and run.

"By using digital technology, people can have access to the latest electric technology at a fraction of the cost of buying a car that both saves people money, is good for transport in Exeter and its environment”.

Councillor Rosie Denham, Lead Councillor for City Transformation, said: “We’re pleased to be supporting this great initiative, which not only helps to reduce our dependency on private cars but also helps improve air quality in the city.”

Sara Parker, sales director of the regional division of David Wilson Homes based in Exeter, said: “We are delighted to have been able to support this project as part of our contribution to the community. Without doubt the use of electric cars is growing and sustainability is at the heart of our developments.

“The car share scheme itself is fantastic and gives access to cars to people who don’t need one all of the time. The fact that the car is electric makes the offer even more compelling. We wish them well with the venture.”

The electric car is available from £4.75 per hour and FREE mileage, all booked via smartphone or online and accessed by smartcard. The Renault Zoe is easy to drive, quiet, has a range of up to 190 miles and is zero emissions as its electric is from 100% renewable energy. https://www.co-cars.co.uk/electric-vehicles/
