Stagecoach announces engineering apprenticeships
Stagecoach is on the lookout for future engineering stars with the launch of its 2016 engineering apprenticeship scheme.
The scheme, which was nationally recognised last year at the People 1st Apprenticeship Awards, provides an entry point to a lifetime career in engineering, with many former apprentices progressing onto managerial positions across the company.
Stagecoach recognises there is an engineering skills shortage across the country therefore a commitment to training staff is an investment in the company’s future. Currently, there are around 160 apprentices across the Group who are going through the four-year scheme. In the South West, there are currently eight apprentices undergoing their training.
The scheme is delivered in-house and supported by block release to a specialist college in the Midlands. It also includes training with Stagecoach supplier partners and offers supplementary training on a range of topics in preparation for a full time opportunity within the Company.
Apprentices will typically start on £240 per week and, after completion, there are further training opportunities available including a diploma course and staff development programme.
This year in the South West there are four apprenticeships available: a ‘mechelec’ and a body/coach builder, both based in Torquay; and two ‘mechelec’ positions in Exeter. Qualifying as a ‘mechelec’ means the successful candidates will be equally skilled in both mechanical and electrical engineering.

It’s comprehensive content means at the end of four years we have a highly skilled – and qualified – next generation of engineering talent.
“Across the Group, there are former apprentices who now hold senior positions. In fact, our Group Engineering Director started out as an apprentice. Here in the South West our Engineering Manager in Barnstaple completed his apprenticeship in 2010. I can say without reservation that this scheme definitely works.”
Applicants must have at least three GCSEs or equivalent at grade ‘C’ or above in English, Maths and a Science, or three standard grades at three or above or National 4 or 5 in English, Maths and a Science to apply for an apprenticeship.
