Two-try hero Thomas Waldrom insists Exeter Chiefs always believed they could beat Clermont Auvergne despite going 14-3 down inside 20 minutes.

The Chiefs got stung by two early converted tries from Hosea Gear and Aurelin Rougerie but responded brilliantly with a brace from Waldrom and late scores from Don Armand and Mitch Lees.

It secured the bonus point for Rob Baxter’s side and puts them top of pool two after three games, ahead of next weekend’s vital return fixture in Clermont.

“It’s a big result,” said Waldrom, who scored tries in both halves. “We talked in the week about writing our own history, we’ve come up a bit short a few times in the past so it was nice to come out and take another big scalp.

“I’m pleased for everyone at the club. We just had to trust in what we do at 14-3 down, they were the sorts of tries that are very hard to defend but we knew we just had to be patient and keep building."
