Are you thinking of starting a law firm? Just thinking about it can seem too overwhelming, especially if you’re just fresh out of law school. There is no doubt that it is a big step but not every part of it has to overwhelm you. If you want to embark on the journey of owning your own private business, then lots of preparation is essential. The better prepared you are, the fewer mistakes you will make. Sure, it’s expected to make mistakes and learn from them, but firms that shut down abruptly often do due to some obvious mistakes that could have been avoided through proper planning.

Luckily, we got you covered with some of the basic things you need to do to open up a successful law firm.

Choose an Area of Practice

Deciding which area of the law you want to specialize in is the first place to start. If you take all types of cases and anything that comes your way, you won’t get far.  Plus, some areas are more difficult to break into than others. This open-end tactic is not as effective as picking a niche that you believe you do well in and that interests you. When you pick an area of expertise, whether it’s a criminal or divorce law, you will be reducing the competition because you will only be in competition with those in the same niche. That’s important because law practice is a very competitive line of work.

Pick a Name

Be careful in choosing a name for your law firm. A name that specifies the niche you choose could be a better name than one that is generic. For instance, writing “Criminal Law Group” is more effective than writing “(So and So) and Associates.” Remember that most people will look up firms online first before approaching one. Having a straightforward name that specifies what you do makes it easier for people to find you online, and having a keyword in the name of your firm is also encouraged. This will help you optimize the name of your firm.

Create a Website

One of the obvious mistakes that a law firm might make is not having a website, which simply won’t work in today’s world. Make sure you have a website that is easy for people to navigate through. There are things that you might not pay attention to, such as the color scheme, but others will probably notice them. Your website should show your professionalism in each of its pages. You also need to make sure that your most important pages, such as the About Us and contact pages are optimized. Additionally, you need to make sure that your site is mobile-friendly since most people nowadays use their cell phones to browse the web.

Employ the Right Software

Now it’s time to choose the right software to manage your firm. This is another area where many law firms fall short on by not using software to streamline the business. Being an attorney, you know that it is imperative for your work to remain organized and the right software will allow you to deliver your legal service in an efficient manner.

You should make use of the best technical advantages available to you to stay ahead. If you specialize in family law, for instance, you will notice that using legal software for family lawyers aligns very well with what an up-to-date law firm needs. The purpose of this software is to manage and simplify your workflow, allowing you to collect information about your clients, stay abreast of your appointments and deadlines, customize the task lists for individual cases, and much more. It’s hard to imagine running a firm without using software that is specially designed for attorneys and the nature of their work.

Build a Network

Without clients, there is no business. Networking is one of the most important aspects of the business to start getting clients. You can start by getting to know other lawyers who don’t specialize in your field, but might be willing to help you get referrals. Established lawyers also don’t mind giving younger or less experienced lawyers a helping hand. Ask them how they started and where they got clients from. Start spreading the word far and wide that you have opened a law firm, and focus first on your geographical location by joining a lawyer organization or list in your area.

There will always be some people who will tell you that you can’t do it. So, a basic first step is to ignore negative comments and be confident in yourself and your abilities. Nothing happens magically overnight, but with the right plan, perseverance, and dedication, starting a firm can go from being just a dream to becoming a real, tangible accomplishment.
