Devon Chamber of Commerce to host Career Advice Fairs
Throughout March and April, Devon Chamber of Commerce will be hosting a number ‘Your Future’ Careers Fairs in conjunction with schools, colleges and local partners in the county, aimed at supporting the successful transition of young people from education to the world of work.
The events, aimed at 14-24 year olds, form part of a programme of 250 England-wide career events being delivered by Accredited Chambers of Commerce and supported by the Skills Funding Agency.
Planned events include:
- Wednesday 16th March at South Devon College, Paignton
- Friday 15th April at Tavistock College, Tavistock
- Wednesday 27th April at Cedars Inn, Barnstaple in conjunction with North Devon+
- Thursday 28th April at Newton Abbot College, Newton Abbot
These free to attend events are a key part of the Chamber Network’s Bridging the Gap campaign which is aimed at improving connections between business and education, so that young people are better prepared for work and businesses have the skills they need.
The events will offer young people the opportunity to:
• Talk to businesses about careers in their organisation and try out some real work activities
• Get involved in interactive workshops to find out what employers are looking for, what they expect to see on a CV and more
• Talk to employed young people and find out what they do, how they got into their role and how to follow in their footsteps
• Get information on how to enrol on a variety of Apprenticeship, College or University courses
It will also give businesses a platform to meet the employees of tomorrow and to talk about the skills and qualities they look for when recruiting.
Cate Taynton, Head of Commercial Projects for Devon Chamber of Commerce said: “Devon Chamber of Commerce is delighted to be part of this initiative to forge closer links between the business and education communities. Equipping young people with relevant and useful skills to gain meaningful employment is crucial to support the needs of businesses seeking skilled people to fill the growing skills gap.”
Joe Billington, Deputy Director of Consumer Services at the Skills Funding Agency said: “The Skills Funding Agency is pleased to be supporting the ‘Your Future’ programme of events which will be an excellent, innovative way to increase young people’s understanding of the world of work, sharing our own National Careers Service vision of inspiring young people to look ahead, seek the next opportunity, and develop new skills to prepare for the future.”
