EaRTH Cycles' 100th donation
A BICYCLE recycling and repair project based at Bicton College has reached a significant milestone, launching a new 'Bring Your Own Bike Night', aimed at training people to fix their own wheels.
Founded just over a year ago, EaRTH Cycles has been taking in unwanted bikes and refurbishing them, recently receiving their 100th bike donation.
As well as diverting waste from landfill, the project gives people a chance to learn bike maintenance through refurbishing the donated bikes.
Sam White, EaRTH Cycles Coordinator, said: "Our 100th bike donation is a real milestone and we are grateful for the support of the community in achieving this.
"It is a chance for people to get involved and learn bike maintenance in a very ‘hands on’ way. At the same time, we can provide affordable transport and new skills to the community."
Once the bikes have passed a rigorous safety check they are sold at affordable prices, funding more refurbishments and supporting other cycling initiatives. EaRTH Cycles is also keeping Bicton College staff on two wheels by providing them with Shuttle Bikes.
Almost half of their refurbished bikes have either sold or are awaiting sale, making the overall project a "resounding success". Their 'Bring Your Own Bike' nights run every Wednesday from 5 to 7pm.
