Entries sought for Devon’s best civil engineering work
Outstanding engineering projects of all shapes and sizes from across Devon are being sought for this year’s Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) South West Civil Engineering Awards.
The prestigious competition showcases the region’s best civil engineering work with categories for new and re-engineered projects, above and below £3 million. There are also awards for graduates and apprentices to reflect the bright new talent coming from the South West and special awards recognising community involvement, collaboration and projects making a significant contribution to the region’s society and economy.
Entries are open to projects completed between 1 January and 31 December 2019. The winners will be announced at a gala ceremony hosted by writer and broadcaster, Judi Spiers at the Bristol Marriott Royal Hotel on Thursday 2 July 2020.
Miranda Housden, ICE South West regional director, commented: “Our awards recognise outstanding civil engineering achievement, innovation and ingenuity around the South West. They’ve grown over the last decade into the highest honour for engineering excellence. We have an amazing record and history of engineering in our region, I’m expecting to see a diverse and interesting mix of projects coming forward as we showcase the difference civil engineering is making to our communities.”
Among the 2019 winners were the Starcross and Cockwood Tidal Defence Scheme on the Exe Estuary, which took the Collaboration Award in recognition of community engagement leading to significant improvements in the project, and the Cowley Bridge Flood Alleviation at Exeter, winning the prize for the best project under £3 million.
People across the South West can get involved with the award scheme and vote for their favourite project. Last year’s People’s Choice Award went to the reconstruction of the Old Wool Bridge in Dorset. The historic structure, made famous by Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles, partially collapsed in 2018.
Mel Karam, CEO of Bristol Water and a member of the judging panel, said: “I’m looking forward to seeing civil engineering at its best. It’s a chance for us to shout about the fantastic, creative and innovative civil engineering taking place across the South West, providing solutions to society’s problems.”
