Make Milk Matters conference in Exeter
On Wednesday 20 April Mole Valley Farmers is holding a free ‘Make Milk Matter’ conference at the Westpoint Conference Centre, Exeter, with innovation in dairying being its key focus.
Given the current volatility in the sector, dairy farmers are constantly looking for new, innovative tools to enhance their business and optimise opportunities. This seminar will consider new research; share the experiences of successful European farmers and introduce new technology which can help progressive dairy farmers to fine tune their businesses as they seek the competitive edge.
Julie Edwards, Head of Agricultural Affairs and Communications explains: “Attendance at the conference is free and farmers will have the opportunity to hear from inspiring industry speakers including Chris Walkland, an award winning journalist specialising in food production and Bert van Niejenhuis, a master CowSignals trainer and expert in understanding bovine behaviour.
The conference will also include a session from Francis Cosgrave, Technical Veterinary Consultant with Elanco UK, the event’s main sponsor. There will be a number of case studies and inputs from Dr Martin Mayer from Bayer Genetik and Stef Beunk, who farms German Fleckveihs. This will be followed by a panel debate, with questions from the floor”.
Molecare Veterinary Services has recently become a joint launch partner of an innovative new product which the company believes will help improve farm efficiencies. This is the smaXtec – a revolutionary bolus that detects changes in activity and temperature of the cow, together with measurement of pH in the rumen. The bolus will be able to detect ketosis, adidosis, oestrus and general ill health in cows.
Julie continued: “The device works by sending signals every 15 minutes to a local base station - positioned in the parlour or cattle shed - which in turn transmits a series of alerts to a mobile phone or computer. These provide a real time guide to what is happening to the animals on a farm and the additional data will positively impact on milk production and quality.”
