22-year-old Sam engineers an award-winning future

A 22-year-old man from Exeter has been named the South West’s Most Promising Apprentice in a prestigious regional awards programme run by the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA).

Sam Atwill, who works for Newton Abbot-based Glendinning, received the accolade after impressing judges with his commitment, know-how and technical knowledge during the first year of his highways apprenticeship programme.

The CECA South West Training Awards are presented to trainee civil engineers, apprentices and surveyors in recognition of exceptional performance and dedication in their chosen careers.

Sam, who will complete his apprenticeship at the end of this year, said: “I left school at 16 and tried a number of jobs but when Glendinning offered me an apprenticeship I could see a career path opening up for me. I’ve been given the opportunity to work on lots of projects - I really enjoy the fact that every day is different.”

With training undertaken through Exeter-based South West Highways’ shared apprenticeship programme - in conjunction with CITB-ConstructionSkills - and on-site support from Glendinning’s contracting division, Sam is on track to gain a Level 2 NVQ.

Said Glendinning’s Richard Hobson: “Sam’s attitude to his employment is excellent,

progressive and deserves recognition. What sets him apart is the speed with which he has amassed so much industry knowledge and his sheer dedication to his work - he is a positive role model for young people looking to build a fulfilling career in the construction sector.”

Alan Taylor, Executive Director at CECA South West, congratulated Glendinning for investing in young people and providing such positive early career support.

He said: “The civil engineering sector is vital to the well-being of the south west region, providing the infrastructure at the heart of economic development and commercial success.

Forward-thinking companies such as Glendinning and dedicated apprentices such as Sam play a vital role in enhancing competitiveness and creating a sustainable future for all our communities - and we should celebrate their achievements.”

Bernadette Parkinson, Area Delivery Manager for CITB-ConstructionSkills in the South West, said that the organisation was proud of Sam. "We are committed to getting really talented young people into construction - Sam is clearly an example of the sort of outstanding quality and talent that the industry needs.”
