East Devon ranks as the most expensive place to keep taxi meters running

According to research by money-saving taxi app, TaxiTastic (www.taxitastic.co.uk), East Devon is the most expensive place in England to leave the taxi meter running, costing £28 an hour, compared to low rates such as £6 in Redcar and Cleveland. The figures are based on data from the Hackney rate cards from each of the 363 borough councils across the UK.

With a huge 2,500% variation in taxi waiting time charges across the country, it pays to know the rates for the area you’re in to avoid stacking up high fares when stuck in traffic or leaving the taxi waiting as you take an extra five minutes to get ready.

In Scotland, Aberdeenshire tops the list at £36 per hour, whilst Blaenau Gwent in Wales is the cheapest with bargain rates of £1.20.  In Yorkshire, Bradford won’t break the bank at £6 an hour, however by contrast the East Riding costs £26.37 an hour. Also ranking highly is Congleton at £26.40 and London, Epsom, Winchester and Hertsmere all costing more than £25 an hour.  By comparison, the national average waiting time charge is £15.08 per hour, with the data revealing that 90% of top 10 cheapest areas are north of Birmingham.

The TaxiTastic app, which identifies the closest taxi firms, calculates the shortest route and compares private hire taxi fares to ensure the cheapest journeys, and allows users to make significant savings by hailing private hire taxis from their smartphones instead of flagging black cabs which can be up to a third more expensive.
