Next (ExIST) event has healthcare theme
The Chamber’s Exeter initiative for Science and Technology (ExIST) will be welcoming speakers from the South West Academic Health Science Network (SWAHSN), Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust and the Professor of Biomedical Imaging and Biosensing at the University at its May event on Thursday 8th May at the University of Exeter Business School.
The quarterly event, which has a healthcare theme, will outline the challenges faced by our region, the opportunities for business, and an insight into future healthcare technology. As usual there will be three business presentations and networking opportunities with over 100 local businesses.
Paula Varndell, Business Development Manager at SWAHSN, will be providing an overview of the Academic Health Science Network under the title ‘Improving the health of patients and the population as a whole’. Paula will discuss how the AHSN proposes to harness and align the capabilities of the commercial sector and health services in this region, with the science and technology sectors.
Andy McMinn, Chief Procurement Officer at Plymouth Hospitals NHS Trust, will be giving an insight into NHS expenditure and procurement, suggesting how the AHSN and NHS procurement professionals can help businesses supply to the NHS.
Finally, Professor Nick Stone, Professor of Biomedical Imaging and Biosensing at the University of Exeter will illustrate how rapid advances in Biophotonics – harnessing the power of light – could revolutionise diagnosis. Nick will explain how this technology could lead to real-time molecular diagnosis, enabling personalised medical treatments, and be applied to numerous clinical needs, especially, cancer and degenerative diseases.
Paula Varndell from SWAHSN said “We are delighted to be speaking at the next ExIST quarterly event. The SWAHSN was set up last year to encourage involvement in medical research and drive innovation in healthcare. It will be great for us to speak to the science and business community about our current position and what we are aiming to achieve.”
Robert McIlwraith, Chair of the ExIST group and board director of Exeter Chamber, said “Please join us at the University of Exeter Business School on the 8th May for what is sure to be a fascinating set of presentations.”
