Science and technology speakers cover sport topics
Over 100 delegates attended last month’s Exeter Initiative for Science and Technology’s (ExIST) quarterly event which was held at Sandy Park, home to the Exeter Chiefs.
January’s event had a sport theme as Exeter is proud to host the West Country's premier rugby union club and 3 of 2015's Rugby World Cup matches. As usual there were three business presentations and networking opportunities.
The first of the three speakers was Mark Twiggs, Head of Strength & Conditioning at Exeter Chiefs. Mark spoke to attendees about performance monitoring in Rugby Union.
Attendees will be able to gain an insight into the technology used by the Chiefs to achieve and maintain premiership performance.
Also at January’s meeting was Dr Tim Paulden, Innovation & Development Manager at ATASS Sports. Dr Paulden explained to delegates how to turn sports data into knowledge.
Dr. Tim Paulden highlighted some of the inherent pitfalls of using elementary statistics to model sports - with illustrative examples from the worlds of football and tennis - and demonstrated that much more advanced statistical machinery must be deployed if we wish to accurately assess the underlying probabilities.
Last on the agenda was Jo Bowtell, from the University of Exeter whose topic of conversation was focused on new developments in sports science at Exeter.
