Socks and sleeves aimed at preventing the distressing problem of skin tears are being extensively trialled at The Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital and at local GP practices.

The protective garments have been designed by entrepreneur, Peter Thornton, part of the famous Thornton's confectionary family.

Peter, who lives in East Devon, came up with the idea after suffering from the distressing condition, estimated to affect up to three million elderly people in the United Kingdom.

Peter says that if adopted, the socks and sleeves could save the NHS Billions of Pounds.
