Adventure seeker Derek Brown has successfully completed the Ironman Wales competition, which is considered to be one of the toughest Ironman courses on the international circuit.

Incorporating a choppy 2.4 mile swim, a 112 mile hilly cycle followed by a full marathon through the narrow streets of Tenby, West Wales, Derek completed the course in a fantastic time of 12 hours and 35 minutes.

As part of his tough training regime, Derek completed several competitions to gain experience and prepare for the Ironman, including the River Dart 10km swim, the Bicton Blister 10 mile run, the Fred Whitton cycle challenge covering 112 miles over the steepest mountain passes in the Lake District and the Slateman Triathlon in North Wales.

Bicton College colleagues from the Academy of Outdoor Adventure also helped Derek in his training, which included sea swimming at Budleigh with Darren Ellis and Jim Davis; cycling around local lanes and Dartmoor with Karl Watson and Jevon Jennings; running across Woodbury and along the coastal path with Justin Nicholas and in the gym with Nigel Stanley.

Outdoor Adventure Programme Manager Derek says, “I’m delighted to have raised over £1000 for Scope, a charity that does valuable work in improving the lives of disabled people and their families. Through my work in the outdoor industry I have seen the benefits of providing activities for all and wanted to raise money for an organisation that makes a difference in a number of ways.

I completed the Ironman course in 405th place overall and everything went to plan! Thanks to those who have helped me in training and in sponsoring me for the event, and especially the crowds on the day who showed amazing support.”
