Devon Community Foundation benefits from mega cycle ride

Devon Community Foundation has benefitted from the cycling efforts of Darren Goodman from Exeter-based private property company Eagle One, who recently cycled 143 miles in just one day to raise a fantastic £1,822 for the charity, which supports hundreds of voluntary and community groups throughout Devon.

Darren’s motivation to complete the cycle came from a boast in the office  stating he could cycle to each of its subsidiary offices of Blue Cedar Homes in one day. However, after recently opening an office in Ringwood, Dorset, this challenge took Darren from Exeter to Bristol, before finishing in the Ringwood office.  In total, the challenge took him 12 hours and 19 minutes and saw him burn an astonishing 9,130 calories in total!  To applaud his efforts Eagle One and Blue Cedar Homes have generously matched his sponsorship money, raising a grand total of £3,644 for this fantastic local charity and the ‘Big Blue Cedar Ride’.

Darren said, “The ride wasn’t as bad as I had built it up to be in my head.  A constant flow of Jaffa Cakes kept me going as well as the mountain of food which was kindly organised for me at our Bristol office.  My riding companion, who unbelievably did it for fun, unfortunately had six punctures during the course of the day, which somewhat slowed the average speed down!”

Darren continued, “A huge thank you must go to all the generous donors, your gifts will make a much needed difference to local people in need  and  I am currently looking for next year’s crazy challenge so if you have any ideas, please let me know!”

Martha Wilkinson from Devon Community Foundation said, “We cannot thank Darren and the team at Eagle One enough for their continued support. They are always thinking of fun, new ways to raise money for us.  If they aren’t cycling miles in the name of charity, they are running marathons and even chopping off their 35 year old beards all in the name of fundraising!”

Blue Cedar Homes specialise in providing distinctive homes for people who want to get the most out of their retirement and value the quality of their living environment.  Eagle One are part of Devon Community Foundation’s Devon 100 Club – a club set up for companies wanting a simple, cost-effective and rewarding way to support their local communities as part of their Corporate Social Responsibility programme. Members of the club benefit from Devon Community Foundation’s support saving the company valuable staff time in dealing with charitable requests, while still ensuring that donations go to local charities.
