Swap and support SAFE
Exeter women now have the perfect chance to get a new wardrobe without spending a fortune. For £5, you can turn up at Exeter Phoenix on 14 June from 5.30pm, and for every item you bring, you can exchange it for something new. Plus if you run out of clothes to swap, you can take home any other item in return for a donation to SAFE - the only charity in the area that specialises in the support and protection of women, men, children and young people affected by domestic violence.
About SAFE
In the last 10 years the Refuge in Exeter has offered safe accommodation to 916 women and 943 children and young people escaping domestic violence and abuse.
This high number reflects the scale of domesticviolence and abuse in the community. Domestic abuse is a significant issue. It makes up 24% of total recorded violent crime in Devon with Devon and Cornwall Police recording 8,798 incidents of domestic abuse in Devon in the year to March 2011. Home Office statistics show that two women on average are killed by a male partner or former partner every week in the UK. All children and young people at the Refuge have been adversely affected in some way by living in an atmosphere of abuse, and some may be severely traumatised. For these victims being able to access safe Refuge accommodation and specialised help is vital.
For those who wish to bring lots of clothes, an earlier drop off at Exeter Phoenix can be arranged by contacting kelly.johnson@exeterphoenix.org.uk
