Team Mi-space exceeds £50,000 fundraising target for Prostate Cancer
Mi-space’s charity cycling team has exceeded their fundraising target of £50,000 one month ahead of their June 7thride from London to Amsterdam, in support of Prostate Cancer UK.
This is the second year that Mi-space has participated in the event, last year raising £14,300 with a team of 11 riders. This year Mi-space set out to achieve far more, in terms of rider participation, awareness of Prostate Cancer and raising funds for Prostate Cancer UK; they now have a contingent of 32 riders.
Team Captain and Divisional Director of Mi-space, AJ Eaton, said:“Based on our experience last year, we wanted to make the 2019 ride so much more than a fundraiser. We’ve tripled our rider numbers to 32, including seven females, and we’ve increased our focus on the fitness and wellbeing element of the event as well as awareness of Prostate Cancer and, of course, fundraising.”
The £50,000 target was reached through a multitude of initiatives. Over 40 local businesses and members of Mi-space’s supply chain have donated to have their logos displayed on rider’s shirts; while the team has hosted ‘Curry and Comedy nights’, fishing competitions, golf days and quiz nights to boost funds. Several high-profile sports people have also offered their support and a charity dinner was held with Frank Bruno MBE and four rugby players from Wales’ Grand Slam winning team.
The ride takes place over June 7thand 8th, starting from the Lee Valley Velodrome at London’s Olympic Park before the riders pedal 145 miles to the Dutch capital’s Johan Cruijff Arena, the home of the mighty Ajax football team.
Now in its fifth year, Prostate Cancer UK has named the event Football to Amsterdam. The association with football stems from the fact that Prostate Cancer takes the life of one UK male every 45 minutes – one half of a football match. This association has proven hugely successful in gaining support from the football community, with high-profile footballers and television presenters sporting the Prostate Cancer badge, known as the ‘Man of Men’ during on-screen appearances and supporting events around the UK. Riders are encouraged to team up with their local football team, and Team Mi-space has aligned itself with League Two’s Exeter City Football Club. Several fans and staff members at Exeter City FC are participating in the ride, including the club’s Lynn Travis and Simon Larkins.
Lynn Travis is undertaking the ride for the second time. She said:“I completed the ride last year along with Simon as part of Team Mi-space, and I enjoyed it so much that this year I’ve recruited my husband, Malcolm, to join us. The club hosted our Curry and Comedy Night and we’ve had bucket collections on match days, where our supporters have been extremely generous.”
While training for the ride continues, so does Mi-space’s efforts to further boost their fundraising total. Further donations are welcomed via the team’s JustGiving page in the name of ‘Team Mi-space’.
