A GCSE German pupil from Exeter School has taken first prize in a prestigious Goethe Institut competition.

Middle Fifth (Year 10) pupil Katie Hayman was awarded first place in the News Reading category of the Digital Days Competition for which she had to film herself reading the news in German.

Katie beat almost 150 applicants to win a £50 prize and impressed the panel of judges who said it was very difficult for the selection panel to come to a decision.

The idea for Katie’s entry was judged to be extraordinarily unique and creative and the panel praised Katie’s thorough and high-standard implementation as well as her strong demonstration of her German language skills.

German teacher Mrs Wilson said Katie’s entry was fantastic.

“The competition ran during our exam period, so we had very little time as a class to prepare for it,  but Katie was so keen she went home over the weekend and produced the video with absolutely no input from me,” said Mrs Wilson.
