Businesses across Honition were invited to an open evening at Honiton Primary School last week (11 July) to learn more about the school and to have an opportunity to be a part of its future.

They were treated to a tour of the school and enjoyed a presentation on the journey the school has taken over the past five years as well as a view of what the future holds.

Honiton Primary has been on a drive to bring four iPads into every classroom of the school. The evening was part of this drive, which will decrease the pupil to tablet ratio.

After the school purchased one iPad for each classroom, they saw the significance of the investment, not only in the usage by the students but also in the streamlining of administrative tasks by the staff.

By using the iPad apps, the teachers are able to save over 40 hours a term on evidence collection to mark a pupil’s learning journey.

Honiton Primary school was awarded an “Outstanding” by Ofsted in March 2013 after their previous award of Satisfactory. This was a huge achievement by the school but in no uncertain terms meant that they could rest.

The motto of the school is “Never let it rest until your good is better and your better best”.  This is taken to the heart of everything the school sets out to achieve and the drive to bring additional technology into the school was no exception.

Julian Hellyer, of Hellyers of Honiton Ltd, said: “The evening was a wonderful introduction to the school, not having children means that I have not seen the inside of any school since I left. The school was inspirational and exactly what I would want for my children, it has not only inspired me to sponsor an iPad but also to build a relationship with the school as a business.”

Later in the evening, Hellyers of Honiton, which trades as HiQ, made a commitment to work with the school to assist with building a tire wall.

Sponsors of iPads thus far are:  FTT, Perryman Bros, Jurassic Coast Coffee T/A Costa, Lessons, Moshulu, Hellyers of Honiton Ltd T/A HiQ, Tim Avery, the PTFA.

“Honiton businesses are an important part of our local network. It gives children a valuable insight into the world of work and their potential future. By sponsoring an iPad , these businesses have provided an extra dimension to our outstanding curriculum. It will help our children learn in a fun and innovative way.” said  Andrea Brown, Head Teacher of Honiton Primary School.

Selena Burrows, school governor said: “We have been overwhelmed and incredibly thankful to the local community with their commitment and support of our school”.

The evening brought the school half way to their target, if you are interested in sponsoring, please do contact the school on 01404 548 700.
