Bicton College student Melanie Cowlan completed Level I and 2 Fibrecraft in 2012. Majoring in a wide range of felt making techniques, Melanie has subsequently established a Fibrecraft enterprise and has recently resigned from her place of work in order to expand her business.

Since 2012 she has developed a repertoire to include: wearable art, wall art, vessels, accessories, jewellery and greetings cards. Plus, she has received numerous commissions for wall art and wearables.

Melanie’s techniques include nuno felting using the finest merino fibres, silk fabrics and lustrous fleece. Melanie’s passion for her art led her to convert her caravan into a dyeing studio!

Her work is authentic, hand crafted in Devon, using local as well as exotic fleece, each piece is irreplaceable and unrepeatable… unique… to this end she continues to explore, research and design new techniques.

In addition Melanie gives demonstrations and talks, and is teaching workshops at a range of venues in Devon and beyond.

Melanie is the first Fibrecraft student to become an official Associate Volunteer (Fibrecrafts) with Bicton College.

Her work is showcased and sold through local outlets as well as at shows, events and craft fairs.

Melanie’s work was recently shown at the Devon County Show, and can be seen on July 17-18 at Killerton for the ‘Killerton Spun’ weekend.

Bicton College runs regular fibrecraft courses. Please contact lecturer Gill Burbidge gmburbidge@bicton.ac.uk for more information
