Bob Dylan: Revisionist Art at Castle Galleries
Selected works from Bob Dylan’s latest collection, Revisionist Art, are now available for the first time as limited edition, hand signed graphics from Castle Galleries, Exeter tomorrow (12 April).
Castle Galleries on Cathedral Yard will release four never before published limited edition graphics from Dylan’s latest and acclaimed Revisionist Art collection. Each of these limited edition graphics – numbering only 195 paper limited editions and 95 boxed canvas of each title – will each be individually hand-signed by Bob Dylan.
The collection of magazine covers created by Dylan challenges the viewer to re-evaluate their thinking in a media saturated society, where covers of magazines are often taken at their word, without being questioned by the reader. The four works are entitled ‘Fruitcake: Billionaire Rex Kadaffi’, ‘Archeology Today: The Pagan Kings of Kent’, ‘Sports Illustrated: Female 3rd Base Coach’ and ‘Rolling Stone Magazine: Rhianna’.
Luc Sante, in his introduction to the Gagosian exhibition catalogue, notes that Dylan’s Revisionist Art magazine covers seem to emanate “from a world slightly removed from ours – a world a bit more honest about its corruption, its chronic horniness, its sweat, its body odour.”
The finished pieces, large silk silkscreens on paper and canvas, are imbued with the kind of satirical sleight of hand for which Dylan is known. Dylan has taken social, political and pop culture icons and married them with headlines either real or imagined, creating a mash-up of the real and unreal that mirrors the head-scratching perplexity of today's media.
Rita Jones, Castle Galleries, Exeter’s gallery manager, said: “Artist, actor, poet and writer, Dylan, has proved over and over that he works flawlessly across all creative mediums. Through his art we are given an insight into the man that has contributed so much to society’s culture and Revisionist Art is no exception to that.
“Previously in The Drawn Blank Series, we saw Dylan use a relaxed approach and use colour to transform his original drawings, which then took on a whole new meaning, similar to his music where he’ll experiment with his lyrics and tone. However, in Revisionist Art, we see a hard-edged and distinctly Dylan-esque artistic intelligence fully at work, providing a glimpse into an artistic process that is equally maverick and elusive.”
Each graphic has been created as a paper limited edition of 195 and a boxed canvas of 95* and are certified and personally signed by Bob Dylan. The prints are priced from £1,950.
